Dimmeys Clock Tower Clock Face Repair
The Ask:
When clock faces on Melbourne’s iconic Dimmeys Clock Tower needed replacing, the glazing experts at Express Glass stepped in to restore a beloved landmark to its former glory.
The Scene:
Busy Swan Street in Richmond, with difficult clock tower access due to nearby live tram lines, high foot traffic and the clock tower itself being positioned a sizeable distance from the road. Project managers spent a considerable amount of time meticulously planning the job, which involved a variety of stakeholders, including Heritage Victoria.
Result:
Using a cherry picker crane, the Express Glass team lifted two 146kg, double-glazed, custom-made clockfaces to the clock tower. The clock faces needed to be installed from the inside of the tower, which required them to enter via a large window on the level below the clock face holes axnd be lifted via a slot that had been cut in the ceiling. Once the clock faces were installed, a horologist was brought in to reinstall the clock hands and internal mechanism, and a signwriter was engaged to paint the iconic ‘DIMMEYS’ onto the clock faces.
